“It is said that you’re never truly ready to lose a parent, no matter how old you are.”
My name is Evan Lloyd Steiner. I’m a 34 year-old abstract and impressionist artist based in northern New Jersey. My medium of choice is paint, though I have a deep appreciation for all art forms, including music and poetry.
In April 2015, I lost my father. He was 78 years-old. It is said that you’re never truly ready to lose a parent, no matter how old you are. Having lived it, that’s true. In August of 2015, I started painting as a therapeutic release to help cope with my father’s passing.
I have no formal training in art. My process is simple: expression. Earlier in life, I spent countless hours expressing myself through writing. I slowly transitioned into drawings and painting as the release felt even more gratifying once a piece was complete.
Music sets the tone in my at-home studio. Due to my background in writing, I am always impressed by powerful word choices that lead to meaningful song lyrics. In a series I did called “Dead Dad,” I asked six individuals to share a song that reminded them of their deceased father with me. As I painted their work, I listened to each individual’s song on repeat, allowing the song to lead the entire work of art.
The Message of my Story…
It is simple, create to empower yourself.
